5 Key Signs You Need Replacement Gutters

Worried your gutters are starting to go? Not wanting to be part of the 14,000 daily Americans who experience a water-related emergency in their home?

Whether your gutters are getting older or you’re unsure if you’re seeing telltale signs of deterioration, maintaining good gutter health is important to ensure your property doesn’t become a statistic.

We’ll cover five clear signs that you need replacement gutters, stat.

1. Gutters Pull Away From Your Home

While not necessarily a sign you need replacement gutters, this isn’t ideal. Gutters that pull away from your home or start to sag aren’t doing their job.

It’s possible the connection to your home was severed in some storm, or through basic wear and tear. This will require a closer inspection. Regardless, they will need to be reattached or if damaged enough, a full replacement.

2. Gutters Are Splitting or Cracking

Noticing small cracks in your gutter? This is not a good sign. It does mean you still have time before the gutters fully wear out.

When a gutter cracks it means that small amounts of water will continue to seep through. During a heavy storm, this means quite a bit of water will pour through, widening the crack.

And what’s the point of gutters if they aren’t routing your water? Continual leakage may damage the shingles, your foundation below, or even seep into the fascia boards, permanently damaging them.

3. Pooling Water Around Your Home’s Foundation

Think your gutters are fine only to wake up to a pool of water lurking around your doorstep? Worse yet, are you seeing water dripping into the basement below?

This is indicative of damaged gutters in need of replacing. It’s possible there is blockage or debris clogging the gutters. They’ll need cleaning as soon as possible to prevent severe damage to your home.

Further, it’s important for your gutters to be draining water at proper rates. If you’re seeing gutters overflowing, it’s possible your gutters aren’t large enough for your home.

This warrants replacing a gutter, or gutters, depending on if pools are forming on multiple sides of your home. Certain homes were not built with increased, or heavier rain in mind, particularly in certain parts of the country.

4. Water Leakage Around the Gutter Spout

On a clear and sunny day, check around the spouts of your gutters. Are there water streaks or damage around it? If so it’s likely that water is getting out.

This could be due to a crack, or perhaps the gutter isn’t aligned with a pathway that leads the water away from your home.

5. Paint Peeling and Rust

In regards to how long do gutters last, one of the subtler signs that your gutters are ancient is paint peeling on the interior of your gutters. Once the paint peels, rust will begin to set in.

Rust takes time to truly destroy your gutters. Don’t let it get to that stage.

Get Replacement Gutters

If you’re wondering when to get new gutters, the above are the telltale signs. The cost for replacement gutters varies from home to home, state to state, and depending on the gutters required to properly rout your home.

Bi-annual cleanings can help prevent the decay of gutters, however, when it’s time to replace them, don’t delay!
