2. Dealing With Clogged Drains

While the best way to deal with clogged drains is to confine them from happening in the first position. The best way to keep debris and hair from going into drains is the use of a strainer

However, if you fail to prevent this and end up running into clogged drains it is important to know how best to clear them out.

First off, you should stay away from chemical-based solutions, they can end up doing a wide range of damage. Ignoring this damage may lead to the need for professional plumbing repair.

3. Caring for The Garbage Disposal

The primary cause for damage to the garbage disposal and potential clogging to plumbing is dropping the wrong items into the machine. You should never drop the following in:

  • Pasta and rice
  • Eggshells
  • Cooking oil and fat
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Coffee grounds

When operating your garbage disposal, it is wise to run cold water for 10 seconds, run the disposal, and then run cold water again for 10 seconds. You can also put ice cubes in the disposal from time to time to sharpen the blades.

4. Using the Restroom

As a rule, you should not be throwing anything but toilet paper into the toilet. Things such as baby wipes, cotton swabs, and standard paper towels, even though many believe otherwise, are not suited for a toilet.

Most of the time a toilet leak is small enough to not make any noise, also making them harder to notice. One way to make these easier to notice is by adding food color to a toilet tank.

After a half-hour or so check the toilet bowl. If you can see any color you know that you have a leak.

5. Fixing Leaks

Leaking pipes start as an annoying drip, lead to wasted money, and eventually can cause damage to your plumbing and the rest of your home.

A very important thing to know for a homeowner is thanking a very easy task to finish. Even still, many people do not know how to fix a leaking pipe in their home.

The process consists of three steps;

  • Placing epoxy putty on the leak
  • Obtain a pipe claim and create a seal
  • Use a pipe repair kit and tape
