Does Coffee Suppress Appetite?

Does Coffee Suppress Appetite?

Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverages in the world. No matter where you go, it’s not hard to find a cup of coffee. And when it comes to weight loss, there are two sides that can be taken on this drink: does coffee suppress appetite or not?

There are many claims and studies on various coffee forums about the effects coffee has on our bodies and after going through many of them I think coffee does suppress appetite if you consume it maintaining specific conditions.  So, let’s see in detail.

What is the difference between appetite and hunger?

Some people think appetite and hunger are the same things. But, in reality, appetite is the instinctive desire for food or drink, while hunger is an unpleasant physical sensation caused by the lack of food.  For example, people may have a strong appetite due to a hearty breakfast but lose their hunger as the day goes on.

Does coffee suppress appetite or not?

The first thing we need to consider is what caffeine does inside our bodies. Caffeine is a stimulant which means that once ingested it will increase your heart rate and blood pressure as well as make your brain more alert.

With all these changes happening within your body after drinking even one cup of coffee, it’s no wonder that there is a claim that drinking coffee does suppress appetite.

With the side effects of getting your heart rate going and making you more alert, it can help to speed up your metabolism as well as increase the number of calories you burn by a significant amount.

Another claim about coffee is that it actually stimulates an empty stomach and makes us consume more. We could say that this claim has some weight to it when you consider the whole caffeine aspect of coffee consumption.

Moreover,  it can take up to 20 minutes for your body to start feeling full after eating, if the food you are consuming is fairly heavy in calories. If you drink coffee before eating, it can cause increased bile production which can push your appetite more sharply.

Coffee is definitely a good way to boost your metabolism and get rid of unwanted fat, but it’s not that great of an idea to drink coffee before eating. A lot of times you might drink coffee while waiting for your food at a restaurant or standing in line.

My advice is to always try and drink your coffee after you eat. It might take longer for the effects of caffeine to kick in, but they will happen eventually and it’s better than drinking coffee while your stomach is empty.

To sum it up, our verdict on this issue is that coffee may suppress your appetite in certain circumstances. So, in order to get the full benefits of caffeine when it comes to weight loss, you need to drink your coffee after meals. It will then have an increased effect on boosting your metabolism and helping you burn more calories even when doing nothing.

A study regarding coffee’s ability to suppress appetite

Coffee is a stimulant.  It increases the body’s metabolism, which can lead to weight loss. A 2016 study in the journal Nutrients found that drinking coffee was linked with lower levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger signals in the brain, and higher levels of peptide YY (PYY), another hormone associated with suppressing appetite.

The researchers concluded that coffee consumption might be helpful for reducing food intake and thus could potentially prevent obesity if consumed regularly before meals. This information should be taken into consideration when considering whether or not to drink coffee while dieting and trying to lose weight.

 Conclusion

You might be wondering does coffee suppresses appetite or not. The answer to that question is both yes and no because it all depends on when you intake coffee and how much caffeine you consume in a day.

So, enjoy your favorite cup of coffee and stay healthy.
