Top 5 Garden Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Backyard Looking Fabulous

We could all use a little more time in the sunshine. And what better way to do it than by giving your garden the TLC it needs to thrive?

Spending time on garden maintenance is fantastic for both your plants and you! It helps fight disease, improves mood, and reduces stress, along with providing many other health benefits.

Now, gardening does take time and energy, but with a guide to garden maintenance to point you in the right direction, anyone can grow a gorgeous, healthy garden. To learn everything you need to know and garden like a pro, just keep reading!

1. Proper Watering is Key

Even if you forget all the other garden maintenance tips, remember that watering properly should be your number one priority. Too little water and your plants will wither away, too much and they’ll grow fungi and become unhealthy.

Each plant has its own watering preferences, but there are a couple of guidelines that stand true for all of them. First, water your plants, don’t drown them.

Second, remember that you’re watering the roots, not the greenery. Keep the water directed at the soil as you water, avoiding the foliage.

2. Weed Often

Weeds are the enemy of a flourishing garden. They cause overcrowding, invite pests, and detract from your garden’s beauty. Go through your garden with a fine-tooth comb often to remove these intruders.

If you’re dealing with more than just a dandelion or two, this service can help you rid your outdoor space of weeds for good.

3. Boost the Nutrients of Your Soil

Your soil becomes less nutritious for plants over time, so it’s important to check the quality of your soil often and replace it when necessary. Other helpful garden materials include mulch and fertilizer, add both if you can!

Mulch keeps the soil moist and protects plants from weeds and pests, while fertilizer boosts the nutrient content of the soil. Be careful not to over-fertilize, however, as this will do more harm than good.

4. Clean Your Tools

Many of us are guilty of filthy gardening tools. After all, they’re used to move dirt, isn’t cleaning them a waste of time?

Believe it or not, it isn’t! Even low-maintenance garden plants do much better when handled with clean tools, as dirty gardening tools can carry disease and bacteria, harming your plants. Clean your tools after each use, your plants will thank you.

5. Know Your Plants Needs

Like any living thing, each plant has its own unique set of needs. Some plants need deadheading, pruning, and/or culling to stay healthy.

Because of this, one of the best pieces of garden maintenance advice we can give is to know each of your plants’ needs and perform maintenance accordingly.

Performing these maintenance methods will promote growth, discourage pests, and create more space for a healthy garden.

Get More Out of Your Outdoor Space With Garden Maintenance

Even knowing the benefits that spending time outside can provide, it can be tough to get out of the house. But with a little garden maintenance, you’ll have an outdoor space to be proud of, and getting outside will be easier, as you’ll want to enjoy it!
