Tidy Tiles: How to Clean Travertine Floors

Do you have travertine floors in your home? Then you’ll want to know how to care for these luxurious but practical floors. After all, you want them to stand up to all kinds of foot traffic and still look their best.

Read on to learn how to clean travertine floors!

Use Honing Powders on Your Travertine Tiles

With the honing process, you’ll apply an abrasive grit to the floors. The grit works in a manner similar to sandpaper. And there are levels of grit moving from coarse to fine.

The honing powders, or grit, will smooth out the pits and indentations in the stone. In the end, you’ll reveal the clean layer of stone beneath the top layer. Use honing in areas where the kids or pets move through the most.

Clean Travertine Floors with a Mop and Solution

The easiest way to protect a travertine floor is with a simple cleaning solution and a mop. If you buy a cleaner at the store, make sure to grab one that’s gentle. You also don’t want one that could discolor the stone.

You can use plain old warm water, too, if you want to keep things simpler. Stay away from adding dish soap or vinegar, though. They can cause more damage even though they might be effective on other surfaces.

Next, grab a mop and bucket and get to work. Just be sure that your mop isn’t dripping with too much water. A lot of water can damage the tiles.

Try a Travertine Sealant or Polish

You can polish your travertine tiles, too. This is a great step to follow up after honing your floors. It’s also the best way to achieve glossy floors.

Polishing uses a finer grit — but enough of one to clean the surface of the stone. If your floors already look good, you might want to polish them to give them a more luxurious quality.

With a travertine sealant, you’ll add a layer of protection to your floors. This will help reduce the likelihood that water or other liquids will penetrate the stone. A travertine sealer from a professional cleaner can give your floors the protection they need.

Be Diligent About Prompt Travertine Maintenance

The key to travertine maintenance is consistency. In other words, don’t neglect spills and grime. Take the time to grab a paper towel and clean up the mess.

Spilled drinks, like red wine or coffee, can stain your travertine tiles. That’s why it’s critical to clean up any spills right away. You’ll prevent the dirt and liquid from finding their way into the pits of the stone.

Make Travertine Tile Cleaning a Regular Process

When you clean travertine floors, you’ll be able to keep these durable floors in good shape. These quiet floors are a great and less expensive option than marble. You just need to make sure you’re cleaning them with a gentle solution on a regular basis.
