How to Keep Blinds Safe for Kids

How to Keep Blinds Safe for Kids

Parents want to ensure their home is safe for their kids, especially if they have toddlers who are naturally curious about everything. However, some dangers may be lurking in their homes, and most parents are not aware of this.

Unfortunately, records say that approximately one child dies every year because of blind cord strangulation, which is happening across the world. If you are a parent of a toddler and need to install blinds in your home, it is best to opt for custom blinds.

How do accidents happen?

Hanging blind cords with a looped end can strangle little kids. Upon reaching it, kids can wrap the cords around their neck, and when they try to sit or fall, the risk of strangulation is high.

Keeping your blinds safe for kids

There are some ways to keep blinds at home safe for your toddlers. The quickest remedy is to tuck the cords of your blind high, away from your child’s reach. Make sure that they cannot reach it while standing on any furniture. Remember that a looped cord could serve as a noose if a toddler falls while it is around his neck. Moreover, the cord must be tucked well so that it won’t drop by all means. If you have older children who know how to operate the blinds, remind them to tuck the cord back after using it.

Furthermore, you may also cut the cord loops to keep it from turning into a noose. Mostly, two cords work the same as the looped cord. However, you still have to check your blinds as some require loop cords. You may also want to check if doing this would void any warranty.

The top recommendation to keep your blinds safe is to go cordless. If you plan to get new blinds, you should consider installing a cordless even if there are no kids around as it is safe. However, cordless blinds still have cords, but it should be safely kept within slats and cannot be pulled by a child’s fingers.

On the other hand, if installing a new one is out of the question, you can install some safety devices instead. Installing a cleat is one of the best options. Cleats are small fixtures that you can attach to your walls where you can wind the cords of your blinds, keeping it away from kids’ reach. However, once the wound-up cord was undone, it could still create a noose, so make sure to keep all the cords wind up.

Another way to keep your toddler safe is to move any climbable furniture near it. Little children love to climb and reach things out of curiosity. Placing your bed and other furniture a little away from the window will keep the kids from reaching the cords. Moreover, this would keep the kids from climbing on your windows.

Your home should be the safest place for your children. Installing custom blinds in your home will make your home look great, but it could also keep your home safe.

This simple guide should help you keep your home safe for your children and other family members. If you need to install blinds, make sure to find a good manufacturer that can offer custom-built blinds that suits your home and family needs.
