How to Replace a Window Glass Pane

Step 1: Remove the Damaged Pane

With your gloves and safety glasses, remove the glass shards from the frame one piece at a time. You may consider laying an old rag on the broken pane to help remove it easily and safely. In case some pieces aren’t loose enough, you may try to tap them with a hammer to create a new break line.

You can also apply duct tape to the pieces to remove them. Once you’re done removing the shards, dispose of them in a box so that they don’t hurt anyone.

Step 2: Measure the Window for the Replacement Glass

Using a tape measure, get the window pane dimensions. When measuring, ensure you start the measurement from the rough opening, starting with the width’s length first. Make sure you get accurate measurements. It helps you get the right-sized glass panes that fit your window.

If you are unsure about the measurements, consult a professional glass replacement professional for total peace of mind.

Step 3: Remove the Old Putty and Glazing

Scrape off the old putty from the window frame to create room for the new putty using a chisel. If the putty is so hard, you may need to use a heat gun to soften it or a hammer. But you need to tap the putty gently to avoid damaging the frame.

Since the grooves have to be smooth before fitting your new window, make sure you clean out the residue inside them.

Step 4: Fix the Rabbets

Take out old metal glazing points out of your rabbets and scrape them down until you reach bare wood. This preparation allows the new glass can fit well in it after replacement.

After the scrapping, apply the exterior primer on the wood using the brush. It’ll stop the bare wood from drawing oils out of the putty and shorten its life.

Step 5: Put the Putty in the Rabbets

Knead the putty until it’s warm and malleable and press it into the rabbets. Make sure the rabbets are full even if it looks messy or uneven.

Step 6: Put in the Glass

After pressing the putty into the rabbets, bed your glass pane into the frame. Ensure you apply little pressure on the glass using your fingertips until the glass is fully centered in the opening. In case you notice any voids developing under the glass, pull it out, add more putty, and repeat the process again.

Step 7: Install the Glazier Points

At the center of the windowpane, lay the glazier’s point flat on the glass and fit the putty knife’s tip against the raised shoulder points. While applying some downward pressure, slowly rock the point side to side until it seats well in the wood. You should then repeat the process on the other side. Afterward, you can scrape off the excess putty.

Step 8: Prepare a Putty Rope and Place It on the Frame

Roll some putty in your hands and make a rope around ¾ of an inch thick. You should apply the putty around the edges of the glass and press it down firmly against the rabbets. Fine-tune the putty so it doesn’t make your windows look messy.

Step 9: Prime the Frame and Paint It

Once your putty is hard enough, you can take some oil-based primer and paint it. You should first apply the primer and then coat the frame with paint until it’s even.
