It doesn’t matter if you bought a piece of furniture last month or 10 years ago.
There comes a time when it simply no longer looks good in your home. That’s when you need to start considering replacing it or reusing it.
In fact, reusing, or upcycling is becoming increasingly popular. If you have an old piece of furniture it’s time you considered reusing it.
Repair and rebuild
Take a look at the item you’re about to throw out and decide if it really does have no life left in it. In many cases, it’s simply that the furniture no longer goes with the room or that you’re getting tired of seeing the same piece every day.
The good news is that you don’t need to throw it and invest in a new piece. You can repair and transform it.
For example, if you have an old table or sideboard then you’ll find that having it recoated by a professional french polishing firm will transform the look and the finish.
It may be the same piece but it will look like new.
Alternatively, if you have an old couch you can take it apart. You’ll find that most of them are simple wooden frames with foam cushions. You can purchase new cushions if necessary and then recover them. You can even replace the spring structure if needed.
This won’t just restore the look and life of your couch, it will also allow you to dress it in the colors that match the theme of your room. Again, it will feel like a new piece of furniture, not one that you’ve had for several years!
It’s important to look at every piece of furniture you own, they can all be recoated or refurbished to create a stunning new look.
Change Its Use
Another good way to reuse old furniture is to repurpose it. This means you’re not going to use it in the way it was intended, instead you’re going to use it for something else.
A great example is an old television cabinet that’s not needed because your television is on a racket on the wall.
You can simply line the compartments and make them into beds for your pets. Or, you can add additional legs and even drawers to give it a different look and allow it to be used in a different part of your home.
This is actually a really good way of keeping old pieces of furniture without damaging them and still ensuring they are useful.
It doesn’t matter what the item was built for, all that matters is that you can use it in a different way.
The great thing about this approach is that you can always put the furniture back if you change your mind in the future. It won’t be discarded, merely re-appropriated and then returned.
Pass It On
Passing it on means that the furniture can be reused, even if it’s not you doing the reusing. There are several options when it comes to passing on furniture. You can advertise it locally for a little money or for free. This will help those who are in greater need than you get furniture for their own home.
Alternatively, you can take the item to your local charity shop for them to resell. You’ll want to check with them first to ensure they do take the item in question. It’s also worth checking if they collect, it will save you having to take it to them.
Another way of simply passing it on is to give it to a family member or a friend, ideally, someone who’s just moved into their own place and any furniture will be a benefit. It’s up to them if they use it for the same purpose as you or not.
Don’t forget, you’re not just helping a friend or someone in need when you pass on your old furniture. The fact that it’s not going to the dump means that it’s not going into landfill and effectively polluting the planet more. By reusing old furniture or passing it onto someone else to reuse, you’re actually doing a little bit to help save the environment.
That’s got to make you feel good!
