What to do when you find standing water in your home?

By Vince Simon Leave a Comment

House floods have a tensely destructive tendency yet they are very widespread globally. Although the destructive power of water can be easily manipulated if the water quantity is manageable, if water continuously keeps adding inches by inches at a stagnant place, it leads to unmanageable chaos. Such incidents are usually experienced in the crawl space, washroom, doorstep or under-terrace spaces.

Leaving stagnant water unattended may have even grave consequences, as it is accompanied by a very unpleasant odour which resembles the smell of rotten eggs. This smell is released as bacteria decomposes the plant or animal matter and releases hydrogen sulphide gas. If the water is grey water or black water, which contains sewage matter, it is impossible to get rid of the smell without using advanced equipment and professional assistance. Therefore immediate action must be taken for stagnant water extraction and removal to minimize the loss and effort.

Steps you must follow when you find standing water in your house:

Step One: Check for the resource.

If you see standing water that it is increasing in height, immediately check for its resource that is usually any leaking pipe, punctured tubes, overflowing tanks or taps and stop them.If you are unable to locate them try to switch off the main water supply.

Step Two: Use Suction pump or hose.

In case you notice stagnant water may use a suction pump or a hose to drain the excess water. If the accumulated water is less you may think of renting a hose, but this can be a bad choice if you don’t know how to use them.

Step Three: Sanitisation and disinfectant.

Clean the entire surface properly with an alkaline detergent compound that to eradicate the deposited mosquito eggs and the false odour. Stagnant water leads to the decomposition of dead and decaying organic matter and reduces the structural integrity of the household articles. If you inhale this pungent odour it can even lead to respiratory diseases.

Step FOUR: Drain your lawn area properly.

Apart from your home, standing water may get collected in the area outside your home and might ruin the appearance of your lawn and garden. This can lead to many toxic chemical substances that can inhibit plant growth and destroy the integrity of other articles. If you notice any wet spot, add sand to the ground adjacent to that area to simulate water absorption. Else, you may dig a shallow trough for water drainage via the wet area to another low lying sector of the garden.

Step FIVE: Clear the blockage gutters and drains.

Gutters get overflown and clog quite frequently due to any obstacle that comes to their way. Covering the gutter with covers help but still, you need to inspect it regularly. Analogously, drains and downspouts also need to be checked regularly. You need to ensure that even a single leaf doesn’t get into the drain or gutter.

Instead of wasting time by trying out obsolete methods, you must call a water damage restoration company immediately. They have the correct set of equipment that is used to eliminate the stagnant water and chemicals to eliminate the unpleasant odour post water removal. Renting the equipment may come with higher expenses and unworthy results as you might know how to use them. Apart from just removing the stagnant water and smell, the restoration provider also helps you in fixing the cause of damage and settling the insurance claims. They have a special team for maintaining records of expenses and supporting evidence to settle insurance claims.
