Tips for Relieving Dust Mite Allergies

Tips for Relieving Dust Mite Allergies

Dust mites are tiny creatures that are invisible to the naked eye, but are present. Dust mites, as the name suggests, are creatures that live, eat, and breed in the dust. The mites are not nocturnal, but mainly attack at night. House dust mites are found in your bed and hide in your mattress, pillows, and blankets and wherever, there may be dust particles. It is known that mites survive by eating layers of human skin, much like the scales of human skin, and they need a dry atmosphere to survive. Mites may seem harmless enough at first, but large numbers of mites can cause a variety of problems. Dust mites cause allergies; these allergies can be called indoor allergies as opposed to outdoor allergies. These simple creatures cause allergies that can lead to hay fever or even asthma.

Because most of the dust mites live in your bed, your bedroom is the best place to start dust mites protection.

Bedding:

Wash in hot water

It is recommended that you wash your bed linen once a week if you are allergic to dust mites. If you have severe allergies or allergic asthma, you can try washing your sheets and pillowcases at a higher temperature (104-140 degrees Fahrenheit), as research shows that this can kill dust mites and make the allergen harmless.

Dust mite detergents

Several companies sell dust mite detergent additives that eliminate the need for hot water washing. They usually use one of the many natural essential oils to kill mites, such as tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, or lavender oil. In addition, a chemical called benzyl benzoate that is used in clothing additives is known to kill dust mites.

Freezer Treatment

Placing porous items (such as blankets, sheets, pillows, cuddly toys, etc.) in plastic bags and placing them in the freezer for 48 hours will kill dust mites. Wash each item after taking the linens out of the freezer. The freezer can kill dust mites, but without rinsing off dead mites and their droppings, you’re still exposed to their allergens.

Bed linen and blankets against allergies

Another great tip to keep dust mites out of your bedroom is to invest in dust mite bedding. The fabric from which this type of bedding is made has pores that are so dense that dust mites cannot penetrate them. Dust mites move into your pillow and mattress when you’re out of bed. The coatings become a barrier between you and the dust mites, which are naturally attracted to your body heat.

HEPA filters for your bedroom

The use of a HEPA filter is recommended to remove airborne mite debris and the mite’s food source, dead skin cells. Make sure you only use an air purifier with a HEPA filter. Ionizers (which are often thought to be good for allergies) cause dust mite allergen particles to adhere. However, because of their small size, they won’t get heavy enough to fall out of the air or be dragged into the collection. Grid. HEPA air filters are preferred for allergy and asthma relief and approved by most allergy sufferers and allergy / asthma associations.

Vacuum cleaner and steam cleaning mat

It has been found that sweeping with a regular vacuum cleaner does not remove dust mites, but rather redistributes them and releases more allergens into the air. The use of a vacuum with rotating brushes leads to significantly better results than a vacuum with only suction. However, now most of the HEPA filter vacuums are becoming more affordable and better suited for cleaning up allergens. It is also recommended that moistening carpets every 2 months can significantly reduce the number of mites in carpets. It is important to use steam instead of hot water vacuums because hot water vacuums allow moisture to penetrate deep into the carpet and the upholstery below. This extra moisture will trigger a demographic boom for dust mites.

A few final Tips:

  • Vacuuming increases the amount of particles in the air for about 20 to 30 minutes. So if you have allergies, have someone else carry out the vacuuming and step outside until all of the allergens stabilize.
  • Never go to bed with wet, freshly showered hair. The ever-thirsty mites crawl out of your bedding and climb over your head to moisten their whistle.
  • If you have severe dust mite allergies, your carpeting can become your worst enemy. It can be worth investing in hardwood or laminate floors.
  • Curtains should be washed as often as bed linen. Long curtains are home to most of the dust mites, but there are ways to get rid of curtains without losing their style – hang fancy wooden or bamboo blinds.
