5 Natural Ways To Repel Common Household Pests

Dealing with pests can be stressful. They breed in hundreds and are very difficult to get rid of completely. Thus the best way to deal with pests is not to allow them to get into your home in the first place.

However, since that may be impossible, homeowners are encouraged to seek advice from clearwater pest control experts to exterminate pests in their households completely.

There are several ways you can try to repel household pests naturally for homeowners who would like to pursue the DIY route. However, you must first inspect and identify the type of pests you’re dealing with. This will assist you in picking the right natural products.

Here are five natural ways to repel common household pests.

Vinegar

Ants are the most prevalent household pests that homeowners often come across. Vinegar is a natural ingredient that many people have in their kitchens. The component has many uses within the home, from cooking to removing bad odors and stains.

Another excellent use of vinegar is as an ant repellent. To make the repellent, you need to mix vinegar or apple cider vinegar with plain water. Next, spray the concoction to the perimeter of your home.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil works as a repellent for various common household pests. The oil repels ants, spiders, fleas, flies, and moths. The most effective way is soaking cotton balls in the oil and placing them in pest-infected areas.

Alternatively, you can mix peppermint oil with water and use a spray bottle to apply the mixture around the perimeter of the area you’re trying to protect.

The great thing about using peppermint oil is that it leaves your home smelling minty and fresh while keeping pests at bay.

Lavender

In addition to bringing an aromatic odor and a touch of color to your home, lavender also works well in repelling pests. The lavender scent repels fleas, flies, moths, and mosquitoes. To keep the pests from entering the house, place the potted plant in pest-infested areas or close to entry-ways like doors and windows.

Homeowners can also use lavender oil to repel pests. You can spray a simple mixture of lavender oil and water around the home to keep pests away. The oil is more concentrated than fresh plants. Thus it is more effective at repelling pests.

Citrus Fruits

Fruits such as lemon, lime, and oranges work excellently as pest repellents. These citrus fruits repel ants, spiders, and mosquitoes. To use the fruits, you would specifically need the juice store-bought juices to work; however, freshly squeezed juice is more concentrated and is thus more effective.

You would need to mix the juice with water and then use a spray bottle to apply the mixture to the affected areas. A more potent combination is a mixture of citrus juice, vinegar, and water. This concoction not only repels pests but also gets rid of grease or grime that may be attracting pests.

Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth (DE), or food-grade, is a naturally occurring substance made from algae. Although the substance is safe for human use, it is highly lethal for insects. Food grade exterminates pests such as ants, spiders, beetles, bed bugs, and other insects with exoskeletons.

Although DE is not a DIY solution, it is eco-friendly. You can buy the solution at any hardware or garden store around you.

Having pests can make homeowners unhappy. They are annoying to deal with, but they also draw an embarrassing connotation of a dirty home. Some pests like termites can physically destroy the structural integrity of your home.

However, there are ways to naturally avoid pest infestation in your home.
