What Is A GPR Survey Used For?

By Craig Green Leave a Comment

Ground penetrating radar is the name of a technology that is used for noninvasive purposes that can allow people to see what is behind walls without breaking them down. GPR Surveys can be utilized for many different purposes, especially establishing the route of the flue that you may be installing. Turner Baker is an individual that has software and equipment that will enable anyone to survey walls and also determine the flue runs that are behind the fireplace, as well as any other wall space where the voids and flues are located.

Ground penetrating radar is technical equipment that uses electromagnetic radiation, delivered impulses, that can provide a subsurface image. It is completely nondestructive, as well as noninvasive, and therefore people can use this technology to survey the interior of properties. They have a wide variety of settings that will allow you to find both nonmetallic and metallic items including:

Plastic

Concrete

Metal

Voids

Older properties that professionals are working on can benefit from this technology when doing renovation projects. If there is a flue in the room that is not being used, specifically on one floor, you can determine if the floors above in that building have been removed or not. GPR surveys can provide you with this information, as well as visual information about their property that will be used for commercial or domestic purposes.

Instead of making holes in the walls, or even in the floors, you can maintain the integrity of any structure by using GPR technology. You can utilize handheld devices that, when simply pressed against any surface, can get an accurate reading of what is there and the software is going to interpret what is there for you.

The benefits of doing GPR surveys are as follows:

This is a noninvasive and nondestructive survey technology that can be extremely safe in public spaces

GPR is also able to detect metallic items, nonmetallic structures, and voids that are there as well

Having access to only one side of a floor or wall is all that you need

The data that is collected can provide you with dimensions and depth, plus show you where all of the voids are

Once the data is collected, you can see what is behind the walls or floors of large areas

Why are GPR surveys useful?

When doing ground penetrating radar surveys, this is perfect for renovation projects, especially if there are a couple of properties that have been divided up into different flats. The walls may have several flues for the fireplaces that are there, some of which may be on different levels of the building. If you are redesigning the building, or if you need to take a wall out, you need to understand how your actions can affect other people that are either above or below you.

Decommissioned flues can be utilized for cabling, or even extra pipework, since it is moving through the property – by using a GPR survey, you can determine where these are and where they are running to. Before doing any type of invasive work – drilling into walls, or knocking through walls, this should be done so that you can clearly see what is behind each wall that you are working courtesy of the GPR survey.
