What’s Better: Laundromat or Do Laundry at Home?

What’s Better: Laundromat or Do Laundry at Home?

People without washing machines or enough money to send their clothes to the laundromat used to wash their clothes by hand. Those who do not have access to a coin-operated or self-service laundromat can still wash their clothes in a machine. But which choice is the most cost-effective? We break down how much each laundry cleaning route costs in terms of resources.

Cost

A premium, fully automatic washing machine can cost anywhere between RM600 and RM1,000, with cheaper alternatives available with minor names and more expensive kinds with more specifications, considering that a good washing machine can last an average of 11 years.

When it comes to cost, washing your clothes in a washing machine is less expensive, especially for families. Some people, however, may not be able to afford the upfront expense of a washing machine.

Laundromat prices vary depending on where you reside, but you’ll always get a better deal from new shops or during promotional seasons when a cold wash can cost less than a dollar. A 10kg hot wash costs from $1 to $2 on average, plus another $1 for 30 minutes in the dryer, generally provided free with detergent. In a typical laundry, this equates to $3 to $4 every 10kg.

It is cheaper to utilize the laundromat if you just need to wash 10kg per month (in the average price range), but if you need to wash more items, buying a washing machine is the more cost-efficient alternative in the long term.

Time Spent

With your washing machine, depending on the weight of the load and whether you need to soak your items, a single load can take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour. Of course, you don’t have to watch your clothes wash for an hour, but each round of washing should take around 20 minutes to complete, including separating, loading, drying, and folding.

While going to a laundromat near you, you must also transport your laundry there and wait for the cycle to finish. You won’t be able to put in a load and then go about your business. So, factor in the normal 40-minute wash cycle, another 30-minute drying cycle, and the time it takes you to return home.

But some other laundromats also offer laundry pickup and delivery, where they get your laundry for you, wash them, and deliver them to your doorstep. At the same time, you do your business in your home, costing you a little extra.

However, if you do your laundry less frequently and load multiple machines at once, you may be able to save time. Nonetheless, gathering many filthy clothes for a single wash may not be a viable solution for everyone.

The home washing machine is a better alternative for convenience, effort, and time spent on laundry.

Which is better?

The number of people in your family, your budget, consumption needs, and convenience requirements all play a role in this selection. If you’re single, you might think that buying a washing machine is an unnecessary expense. Still, a laundromat becomes an unfeasible alternative when it comes to doing laundry for a family.
