Why You Should Consider Building A Home With A Metal Frame

By homoes Leave a Comment

Traditionally houses have been created with a concrete foundation and a wooden frame. The pieces of wood are battened together to create walls that can be filled with insulation before the interior finish is done. On the outside, these traditional wooden houses tend to have wooden cladding.

However, an increasing number of people and businesses are moving away from traditional wood to create a home with a metal frame. The outside can still be clad with wood or another material, effectively making the house look like any other.

But, it has a steel frame and there are several advantages to this that you should be aware of.

Strength

Metal is strong, significantly stronger than wood. This is particularly useful when building a home in an area prone to hurricanes, earthquakes, and other extreme weather systems.

In short, the steel structure is strong enough to withstand harsh weather, potentially ensuring your home is still standing after the storm has passed.

Of course, you need to choose an expert in structural steel Sydney to get the best results.

Design Options

Because steel is so strong you’ll find it can be used to provide support over much larger distances than wood. In other words, you will have more options when it comes to designing your house because the steel takes the weight of the structure, allowing you to create a more unique home

Environmental Impact

You may think that using wood is better for the environment as you can use sustainably farmed wood. In effect, anything used is replaced. Reclaimed wood is not generally an option for a house build as it is difficult to get the right finish.

What may surprise you is that the majority of metal framing for houses is actually recycled metal. In short, you’re not using any additional resources to create your metal frame, making it the better option for the environment!

Pests

In some parts of the country, pests can be a major issue, especially termites and rodents. They are very good at eating their way through the wood and even potentially damaging the structural integrity of your home.

This isn’t an issue when you have a metal framed house. Termites have no interest in metal and rodents can’t gnaw their way through it. In short,  a metal framed house is almost pest proof.

Ease of Construction

It is also worth noting that the metal beams for a metal framed house are manufactured in the factory, ensuring quality control. They are then delivered to the site and craned into position before being bolted together. This process requires less time and less labor onsite, effectively saving you money.

The above are all great reasons why you should choose a metal frame for your next house instead of the traditional wooden one. But, what is most surprising is the fact that there doesn’t seem to be any downsides to using metal framework.

That’s why you’ll see more and more houses being built this way.
