Butane Torch Vs. Propane Torch – Know The Differences

By homoes Leave a Comment

A blowtorch can be a very useful tool at times. It is a requirement in projects concerning any sort of metal. You can even use it to heat or cook food. However, different types of torches use different types of fuel. Their function and design can vary a lot. That is why it is important to know these differences. Here we will provide you with an informative discussion comparing butane torches and propane torches.

Uses

The flame you get from butane torches is comparatively weaker. They are commonly used to solder metals. They can be used to dry damp objects. The heat from a butane torch can effectively shrink tubes and wires, provided it’s in the right hands. Butane torches are often used in kitchens to prepare certain dishes as the flame is very clean.

The propane-fueled flame is almost a thousand degrees hotter than the butane-fueled. Propane torches are used in much heavier tasks. They are used to weld and solder metals. You can use it to sweat pipes or loosen stuck nuts. One of the most convenient things propane torches is the fact that they can be used in freezing temperatures.

Heating Temperature

Butane and propane give off different sorts of flame when ignited. The flame from butane gas can reach up to 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit or 1,300 degrees Celsius. The flame is very clean and can be very effective in soldering metals.

Propane can reach the maximum temperature of around 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit or 2,000 degrees Celsius. Because of such high temperatures, propane torches are relatively more efficient in welding.

Composition

Butane torch usually has an open end that allows the flame to be produced to the fullest. Of course, that can be controlled. The butane has a triggering mechanism that allows the wielder to control the intensity of the flame emitted. Thus, the wielder can produce high or low-temperature flames when necessary.

Propane torches, on the other hand, have smaller torch heads that slightly arched inward. Because of this, the flame emitted from propane torches is more focused. Unlike butane torches, you cannot control the intensity of the flame in propane torches. Typically, the job is done by placing the object at the right distance. The closer to the put the blowtorch, the more precise and hotter the flame emitted will be and vice versa.

Portability

Butane torches are considerably compact. The butane is typically stored in a small or medium-sized canister. Though the flame is frailer, butane torches can be deemed portable and easy to carry.

Propane torches take up relatively more space. The gas is stored in a tank, and the wielder will likely have to carry it. Some of these tanks are fashioned into backpacks to provide more convenience when carrying. To be short, propane torches are not as portable as butane torches.

Safety And Precaution

Personal responsibility should never be neglected no matter what kind of torch you are using. Both butane and propane torches use flammable gases that can brutally harm people or cause unwanted damage to objects. These gases are not explosive in their liquid form but are highly combustible. There is also a matter of environmental safety. Keep the workplace ventilated properly.

Conclusion

After all, that’s said and done; it is undeniable that blowtorches are a quintessential tool. Propane and butane torches differ, but they both carry the same amount of necessity. To know more about the butane torch, you may read this informative post here. It is clear to us that these blowtorches are used in the most menial tasks in our day-to-day lives. Which is more suitable for you largely depends on the nature of your project.
