Ceramic Cookware Pros and Cons

Ceramic Cookware Pros and Cons

Just the other day, Teflon coating was the in-thing when it comes to non-stick cookware. However, as technology advances, alternatives to Teflon are now making their way into the market. These non-stick coating options are much safer than Teflon.

Teflon is known to produce toxic fumes when heated to certain temperatures, and so, having alternatives such as ceramic cookware is a sigh of relief. Currently, people are dumping their Teflon pans for new sets of ceramic cookware.

But is it worth it to invest ceramic cookware? Well, let’s weigh the pros and cons of ceramic cookware to know more.

Ceramic Cookware Pros

There are numerous benefits of using ceramic cookware that should prompt you to get a set for your kitchen. The cookware does away with almost everything you never liked about your Teflon cookware. Well, ceramic cookware also has its weaknesses, but the weight mostly falls on the good side. Even so, you have to get one of the best ceramic cookware in the market to reap the benefits.

Here’s why you should replace your cookware with ceramic.

Toxic-Free

Most ceramic coatings such as Thermalon that’s commonly used in GreenPan are made of naturally existing minerals. For instance, the non-stick layer on Thermalon is made from sand that’s processed without using PFAS or PFOA. The coating doesn’t contain harmful minerals such as lead.

With ceramic cookware, you can comfortably overheat your pan without worrying about toxic fumes that are common with Teflon cookware. Since the ingredients used in the non-stick ceramic coating are natural, the cookware doesn’t release fumes that are harmful to your health.

Food Doesn’t Stick To Ceramic Cookware

Ceramic cookware gives you the same non-stick properties you get with Teflon, only that this time the coating is not toxic. You can cook food on the pan without using oil since food easily slides on the pan without sticking to it.

What does this mean to you? If you don’t like using too much oil for your recipes, ceramic cookware makes a perfect choice. With just a few drops of oil, you can prepare your favorite recipe. That means you’ll reduce the cholesterol levels in the food you eat.

Easy To Clean

Ceramic cookware provides one of the best non-stick surfaces that makes it easy to clean. In most cases, a simple wipe with a damp piece of cloth will make the pan clean. Rarely do you need to scrub the pan as you’d do with stainless steel? As such, it won’t take you a lot of time to clean the pan after use.

However, you’ll need to use a little soap if you’ve made something with garlic or onions. While some ceramic cookware is advertised as dishwasher safe, it’s better to keep off the scrubbing to increase the life span of the pan.

Affordable

You don’t need to break the bank to get a set of ceramic cookware. You can get a 10-piece set of ceramic cookware at a price lower than $60. Even if you opt for three-ply that’s usually a bit costly, you’ll spend something less than $100.

However, some premium brands like Zwilling Spirit are a bit costly. You can get a set of $500. Even so, the brand is more durable compared to the best ceramic cookware you know of. So, it’s worth the price. You can get dipper into your pocket if you need something long-lasting.

Ceramic Cookware Cons

Every good thing has its bad side, and ceramic cookware is no exception. While it’s one of the most perfect replacements for your Teflon cookware set, it has its drawbacks, which you should know before carrying a set home.

Here are some weaknesses of ceramic cookware.

Sorter Lifespan

If you opt for ceramic cookware, be ready to replace your pans after a short period. The Thermolon coating on this cookware tends to wear much faster than other coatings. As such, you may need to replace your pans frequently.

If you use the pans daily, you may need to replace them every six months or less as the non-stick will be worn out already. However, cookware technology keeps improving, and so, we might get more durable non-stick surfaces for ceramic cookware in the future.

Thin And Flimsy

Ceramic cookware tends to be thinner and flimsy compared to other options. While most people prefer lightweight pans, this cookware may not go well with you if you’d like to cook at low temperatures. Since the pans are thinner, they tend to heat up faster than other pans. That means cooking time for your recipes might change.

If you prefer cooking at low temperatures and within the given cooking time, it would be better to go for an option with triple-ply construction. Such cookware doesn’t get damaged easily, and so, your money won’t go down the drain.

Not Compatible with Metal Utensils

The thermal coating used in ceramic cookware tends to be more delicate than other non-stick cooking surfaces. While some companies market their ceramic cookware as scratch-resistant, this non-stick coating scratches easily.

Even by just running a fork on it, you can scratch the coating. Therefore, if you’d like to keep your pans for a longer time, you’ll have to keep off metal utensils when preparing food. Nylon or wooden utensils are recommended for ceramic cookware. Stainless steel would be the best option if you prefer using metal utensils.

Final Words

It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of ceramic cookware before getting a set for your kitchen. As you can see, there are lots of benefits you get with ceramic cookware, and so, you should consider switching to this type of cookware. The pros shouldn’t discourage you from buying ceramic cookware as they’re manageable.
