Common Types of Batteries: A Complete Guide

You can’t do much without batteries. They pretty much help to operate different facets of life— from TV remotes to vehicles. Chances are you’ve heard the phrase “batteries not included” many times.

But have you ever wondered what the different types of batteries are? Well, there are actually quite a few of them. If you’re curious to learn the common types of batteries, take a look at the list below.

Everyday-Use Batteries

When you think about the most common types of batteries, everyday-use batteries might come to mind. They’re the batteries that you put in your child’s toy or in the smoke detector. But even in this category, there’s a vast variety of different shapes and sizes of batteries.

With that said, check out this list of common battery types:

AA Batteries

These batteries are known as AA batteries, and they are the most common types of batteries. You’ll find these in many households because they’re needed for a variety of electronics.

AA batteries are best used in remotes, toys, and things like automatic paper towel dispensers.

They measure at 1.5V and help to pull in high current for devices.

AAA Batteries

AAA batteries are the second most common type of battery. They work well in things like calculators, thermometers, and electronic facial brushes. Plus, they are required by most TV remotes.

AAA batteries operate well in smaller devices that don’t require much energy. But the good news is, they last a long time and ensure that electronic devices operate properly.

AAAA Batteries

You don’t see quadruple A batteries as much as the two listed above. They’re very thin, but they are powerful. These mighty batteries are generally using in things like laser pointers and led penlights.

You can also put them in items such as hearing aid remote controls and glucose meters. Essentially, everyone doesn’t need these types of batteries. They’re not required for everyday items, they’re mainly used in specialty products.

C Batteries

Chances are you’ve owned different electronic devices that called for C batteries. Items like flashlights, toys, and affordable radios take C batteries. They are ideal for heavy-duty devices that require frequent use.

But the good thing about them is they’re a safe, reliable source of energy. You might even put them in items like battery-powered flush sensors.

D Batteries

D batteries are another common type of battery for large devices. You’d want to use these in products that require extended battery life. Items like battery-operated air mattress blowers and hands-free soap dispensers require D batteries.

They are large, heavy, and offer hours of power for various devices.

9V Batteries

Most items you purchase aren’t going to require 9V batteries, but chances you’re using them pretty often. They have a rectangular shape and provide high voltage power. They work in conjunction with products like electronic scales, alarms, and some kitchen equipment.

They provide incredible performance and are extremely durable. They even hold up well in working environments that range from 0 to 130° Fahrenheit.

CR123A Batteries

These batteries come loaded with power. They’re best used for tactical equipment and home automation devices. They’re shorter than AA batteries, but generate 3 volts of energy— which is double the voltage of an AA battery.

These little power packers deliver a significant amount of power despite their size. Therefore, they’re ideal for items like LED flashlights that require ultimate performance. Not only that, but CR123A batteries last longer than most other options.

23A Batteries

These tiny batteries are required in items like watches, medical devices, and garage door openers. It provides 12 volts of power to electronics that require huge, infrequent bursts of energy.

They’re most commonly used in products such as wireless doorbells and keyless entry devices. But there once was a time when they were also used in items such as film cameras.

 CR2032 Batteries

These small, round batteries are becoming increasingly popular. They’re used in devices like weight scales, calculators, and toys. They’re small and thin, but offer lots of power.

Plus, their shape is unique in comparison to other batteries.

These batteries are long-lasting and have an extremely high weight-to-power ratio. You might even need them to power your compact thermometers or wristwatch.

The Types of Batteries: Chemical Construction

Batteries not only come in different shapes and sizes, but they are also comprised of various materials. They’re not all made with the same elements and have different chemical constructions. Here are some of the various types of batteries:

Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries are the most common types of batteries. They offer the highest energy density over any other battery cell. That means they even store more energy than alkaline. You can find these batteries in AA, AAA, and 9V sizes.

Alkaline Batteries

Alkaline batteries are economical and quite popular. They have a capacity rating of over 25,000 mAh, which is fantastic for moderate to heavy-use electronics. Nearly every standard-sized battery comes in alkaline construction.

Silver Oxide Batteries

This option of batteries is typically used in small devices. They are comprised of real silver and are usually sold in button cells. However, the silver doesn’t affect the cost of these batteries, and they’re relatively inexpensive.

Replacement batteries are also becoming popular. Check out this Adt touchscreen replacement battery for touch screen keypads.

The Most Common Types of Batteries

As you can see, all batteries aren’t created equal. There are so many options out there, and each serves a different purpose. The good news is, the world can rely on batteries to keep things going and make everyday life easier.
