Summer is officially winding down, and as sad as that fact is, this is also a great time to start thinking about exterior home improvement projects. Fall can be a perfect time of year for your outside projects, but you’re on a time crunch as winter gets closer and closer. To help you prioritize and plan your to-do list, here are four exterior home improvement projects to tackle before winter arrives.
Paint the Front Door and Garage Door
If your front door and/or garage door need a makeover or you just want to make your house pop and stand out from others on the street, a fresh coat of paint will do the trick. This job isn’t ideal in the heat of summer, as it can be very uncomfortable out there in the heat and the paint can take longer to dry. As we head into fall, now is the time to get your paintbrush out and create a new look.
Popular paint colors for a front door include:
- Black
- Red
- Blue
- Yellow
- Orange
- Grey
- Teal
For those who have never painted the front door or garage, be sure to use the right kind of paint and follow instructions on how to prepare the door(s) for the first coat.
Prune Your Trees and Gardens – Shape Them for Next Year
Even though the spring and summer growing season is coming to an end, your plants and trees are already preparing for next year. Fall is the ideal time for pruning and shaping so that you can look forward to plenty of healthy growth in 2023. If you aren’t sure which plants and trees can be pruned in the fall, speak to your local garden center or do some research online.
Be sure to also do a perimeter walk paying close attention to any low-hanging branches that may be hitting or touching your house. You don’t want branches breaking during a winter storm and causing damage to the home.
Install a Privacy Fence Before the Cold Weather Arrives
If you’ve decided you want a privacy fence, or your current fence needs repairs, then this must be done before the cold weather arrives and the ground freezes. By installing a fence now, you will have all of next year to enjoy a private oasis in your yard. The Fence & Deck Depot can be a great option for homeowners to check out.
Update Exterior Light Fixtures
Exterior lighting will be very important the closer we get to fall, as the days will get shorter, and you want to make sure all walkways and doors are well-lit. This is a great time to replace old and weathered fixtures for newer more modern models, or to simply swap out the light bulbs with fresh ones.
Each of these projects will provide you with very noticeable results that won’t just last the rest of this year but will look spectacular next spring when the warm weather returns, and you head outdoors again.
