Prevention is always the best medicine. When a storm hits and your house is spared damage, people might think that you got lucky.
But, luck had nothing to do with it. Rather, you were prepared and took measures to make sure that your home didn’t suffer any damage. This is much better than dealing with the consequences after the fact.
It doesn’t matter where you live in the world. There are going to be storms in your area. It may be a hurricane, it may be a tornado or it may be none of the above, but there will be times when you have to be prepared for what your area offers.
In this article, I will go over several of the things that you can do to keep your home safe from storms.
1 – Remove some trees
Some of the most expensive and extensive damage comes from trees falling over in a storm. Since yards are not usually that big, there is a good chance that a falling tree is going to land on your home, your car, or both.
Some trees can withstand the high winds that a storm can bring, but others are a ticking time bomb that will one day fall in the right circumstances. You’ll need to have a professional come and do an evaluation on which trees need to go and which can stay. Then remove the ones most likely to cause damage. Otherwise, you will be hiring a company like Timber Warriors storm response to come and remove the trees after the damage has been done.
Even when your trees are given a clean bill of health and seem like they will stand up to any storm, you should be trimming them to avoid a large branch that could fall and also do some damage.
2 – Keep your roof in good shape
A roof being peeled away from the house is a dramatic sight to see and seems like an unlikely event. The reality is that it can happen very easily when the wind is able to get under the shingles. In which case the roof becomes like a sail and takes off.
To prevent this, make sure that your roof is in good shape. If your shingles are old and cracking, or there are growing gaps between them, then you need to fix that. As soon as this kind of damage begins, then it is only a matter of time before it causes some major damage during a powerful storm.
3 – Keep the water away
When there is a lot of rain or snow, then the pooling water will cause a lot of damage and get into your house. Make sure the water has someplace to go by keeping your gutters cleared and the ground around the perimeter of the house properly graded.
Having proper drainage and some kind of retaining area will go a long way to keeping the water out of your house.
