There are over 480,000 licensed plumbers in the US. Chances are, there are about a dozen or more just in your town. How do you decide which one to choose?
When you’ve got a plumbing issue, you want it fixed ASAP. Nothing is more inconvenient than a leaking pipe or a clogged drain–or worse, a plumbing emergency!
Before you pick your plumber, however, make sure that you take some time to ask a few questions. No matter how quickly you need the job tackled, you want it taken care of properly.
Read on for five questions to ask your plumber before signing any contracts.
1. Are You Licensed?
Believe it or not, some plumbers may be working without a license. Plumbing licenses aren’t terribly hard to come by and they ensure that your plumber is properly trained and vetted. Don’t hire a plumber without a license unless you want to take on the risk of working with someone who is less than professional!
2. What Are Your Rates?
If you have a big project that needs to be tackled, you’re more likely to have a plumber in your house for at least a few days. Find out if they charge by the day or by the hour for bigger projects. Make sure that their rates are standard (too low and you may not get the best work) and fit your budget.
3. How Much Experience Do You Have?
It can give you peace of mind to know that your pipes aren’t your plumber’s first rodeo. Of course, even a newer plumber can be well-trained and do great work. However, a plumber with more experience may be better equipped to identify and fix unusual or rare plumbing issues.
4. When Are You Available?
Your plumbing doesn’t malfunction on a 9-5 schedule. When you search “plumber near me,” you may want to look for a plumbing contractor that offers 24/7 emergency services. You might not need them this time around, but if a plumbing emergency arises, it’s nice to call the same plumber you’ve worked with in the past.
5. Do You Take Care of Cleanup?
Plumbing jobs can be messy–even the small ones. It’s best to know what to expect from the aftermath of your plumbing repairs or replacements.
Ask your plumber if they take care of cleanup and what that entails. At the very least, it’s nice to hire a plumber who will take care of waste removal after a plumbing job.
Make Sure Your Plumber Is Fit For the Job
Before you sign a contract with your plumber, make sure to ask these five questions. That way, you can go into your contract knowing exactly what to expect. In the end, you want to take the time to find the best plumber for your needs, even if you don’t have much time!
