Radon Testing -Is It Essential?

By homoes Leave a Comment

It may be tempting to think that testing for radon isn’t necessary because you don’t see it or feel it. The World Health Organization even says that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking!  RAdata can help you do this critical test of your home for high levels of this gas so you can take action to protect your health if needed.

Radon causes cancer

Radon is an odorless gas that is invisible gas and is a natural byproduct of the radioactive decay of uranium. It is a radioactive gas and may reason lung cancer. Radon seeps into homes through fractures in the foundation or the pipes that carry running water. Though it’s not known precisely how long it takes to develop lung cancer from radon. Studies prove that people exposed to high levels of this gas for many years are at risk of developing lung cancer much sooner than those exposed to low levels over the same period. Because radon seeped into your home before you bought it, you can’t be sure how high levels of this gas may be in your home without testing.

What exactly is radon testing?

Testing for radon is easy and inexpensive. You can purchase a test kit from your local hardware store or home improvement store. A test kit usually consists of a small airtight plastic bag and a unique set of instructions. The bag is left in the home for a fixed amount of time and then sent to a lab, where it’s opened and analyzed for radon emissions. If high levels of radon are found, you’ll be informed to take action to reduce the stories in the building, such as sealing cracks in the foundation or ventilation system (ex: installation of fans or vents).

Why is radon testing essential?

Regular testing of your home for high levels of radon is essential to protect your health. Radon is a concern for anyone who owns a home above ground, but it’s even more of a risk if you have certain factors in your home.

If your home was built on or near former uranium mines or flooded, you should consider testing the home for radon, as it can collect in those areas and build up. If there are holes in your home’s foundation, especially near pipes carrying running water, this also means that radon could be seeping into the house. Also, smoking inside a place with a cracked foundation or holes can increase radon exposure.

The facts above show that testing for radon is necessary because it can contribute to lung cancer. Testing your house for high levels of radon can help you protect your family from this dangerous gas.
