Lasers have been used around in different industries for years. Depending on the type of industry, lasers are formed and used to improve various tools. For instance, lasers are used in enhanced tools that are used in the construction industry. When it comes to accuracy of measurement indoors or outdoors, we now have the laser level to make the job way easier.
What are Laser Levels?
Laser levels are specially designed tools used in the construction industry for getting the accurate level of things you want to hang or build. Whether you need to use it on big construction projects or DIY projects, there are lots of available laser levels that you can check out in the market. If you are used to the traditional pendulum level or spirit level, you will surely love using laser levels. Laser levels are the enhanced versions of these two traditional levels since it contains the qualities of the pendulum level and spirit level.
Laser levels are typically mounted on the wall or placed on a tripod to project straight lines. The projected straight lines of laser levels are seen as either in color red or the color green. Being the first and traditional color, most laser levels are seen in color red before. But now, more and more laser levels are manufactured using green lasers to offer more option and convenience to customers like you.
Red Laser Level vs. Green Laser Level
Aside from the obvious difference in color, there are more important things that you have to consider when choosing between the two.
Laser Class and Output
The green laser level uses a different light frequency compared to the red laser level. The green laser level commonly has a class 3r output 5mW while the red laser level commonly has a standard class 2r under 1mW only. Though there is an available class 3r red laser level with 5mW output, the green laser still appears more visible in low light like when used indoors.
A class 3r laser is safe when handled properly with limited beam viewing and the green laser level appears brighter to our human eye. This means that the line that a green laser level project is crisper compared to the traditional red color. Not to mention the fact that the human eye is more sensitive to color green.
Indoor and Outdoor Use
Before you rush and pick a color, you should always consider how you intend to use your laser level. The green laser appears 4x brighter than the red laser so it is perfect for indoor and outdoor use. Without an electronic laser receiver, you can get by if you use either red or green laser levels indoors. However, there are still limitations that both green and red laser faces when used outdoors under a full sun.
Both colors can be seen only within a few meters unless you have an electronic laser receiver to see the laser lines. Moreover, most electronic laser receivers in the market only work best with a red laser level which gives the green laser level a huge disadvantage outdoors.
Green diodes found in the green laser level are also known for reacting differently due to heat. The green diodes’ intensity dims down only at low temperatures while other diodes dim down in full sun. Once the temperature returns to normal, the intensity of green diodes will automatically go back to its normal intensity as well.
Price
Your budget also matters since the green laser level is more costly than the traditional red laser level. The green laser level is more expensive because it uses green diodes that are known to be more expensive by 20 – 25% compared to what the red laser. The cost of each laser level depends on its number of diodes, KTP crystals, and of course, its components.
Final Words
Though the green laser is commonly known for using more power to decrease the total time for operation, this aspect still varies depending on the manufacturer. Before you invest on a laser level, be clear of your purpose whether you intend to use for indoor, outdoor, or for both purposes.
Thus, if you want to use a green laser level for both indoor and outdoor purposes, be sure that it contains an outdoor function to project a clearer line. Lastly, don’t forget to read reviews and compare the item’s price depending on its quality.
