8 Tips to Secure a Modern Home

By homoes Leave a Comment

Your top priority as a homeowner should be providing security for your family. A home isn’t much of a home if your loved ones aren’t actually safe from the threat posed by criminals within its walls. Sadly, burglaries and home invasions are all too common. Many even result in murder. Thankfully, you can prevent such a scenario from happening by making the effort to secure your home. Below are eight tips you can implement to secure a modern home to ensure that your family is always protected.

Install Motion Sensor Lights

Criminals most often work at night. It’s easy to understand why. The veil of darkness provided at nighttime is excellent cover for criminal activities. If you want to prevent your home from being burglarized, removing this darkness is an excellent strategy. Install motion sensor activated lights around every entry to your home. If criminals think they will be seen trying to force their way into your home, they will be more likely to choose another house to target.

Install Smart Security Cameras

Another must-have to secure any modern home is a video surveillance system. However, today’s security cameras are more cutting edge than ever before. Many of them use wireless connectivity and can feed security footage directly into the Cloud in real time. This means being able to check your security cameras’ video feeds anytime you want from anywhere in the world via a smartphone app. The mere appearance of surveillance cameras will also ward off criminals. Don’t go for hidden cameras. Make them as obvious as possible for the strongest effect.

Upgrade Your Door Locks

One of the ways intruders get into homes is by picking door locks. Many off the shelf door locks that come standard with doors are very easy to break into. If you want a more secure choice, consider swapping out your door locks for more advanced versions. You might, for example, want to hire a company like LockWise Locksmiths to replace the spring locks in doors to your home with deadbolts. Spring locks are much easier to break into.

Reinforce Windows

Standard windows are also easy to break into. All you have to do in most cases is shatter the window pane. If you have a high crime rate in your neighborhood, consider using metal grills to reinforce windows at the lower levels of your home. Even if the glass is broken, entry will still be blocked.

Secure Your Wi-Fi

People don’t realize how much risk originates from the internet. It isn’t only hackers from far away third world countries you have to worry about. Local criminals can also use unsecured Wi-Fi as a means to break into your data and steal vital information. This could even include things like bank account log-ins, credit card numbers and more. Your identity could be stolen, and you could lose thousands of dollars. Always make sure your Wi-Fi network is secure so only your family members have access to it.

Secure Your Garage

Your garage can be another entry point for criminals. Consider switching to a smart garage door opener that uses a smartphone app. This will be more secure than a traditional garage door opener. Use a Garage Shield or similar product to cover the emergency release cord. That cord is one of the most common ways burglars break into garages. Also install a deadbolt lock on the door that leads from the garage to the inside of your house. That door should be as secure as your front door.

Install a Home Alarm System

One thing that can certainly be effective against intruders is an alarm system. The sounding of a loud alarm will certainly make criminals think twice about continuing their criminal activity. In most cases, they will flee. However, you can make sure the alarm isn’t an empty threat. Use a security service that will automatically alert the police if one of your burglar alarms is tripped.

Consider Obtaining a Managed Security Package

If you are worried that your own efforts won’t be adequate in regards to properly securing your home, consider obtaining a managed security package from a home security company. Many such packages include multiple services that can help give your home the high level of redundant protection you need to rest easy
