How To Prevent Allergies By Taking Care Of Your Home

By homoes Leave a Comment

When you are an allergy sufferer there is no place to find relief. You would think that coming home would help you overcome your allergies, but not so. The reality is that your home may be contributing to your allergies and you don’t even realize it.

There are a lot of places for your allergens to find you when you are at home and often your allergies are worse there than when you are out and about. This can be from dust mites or pet dander and everything in between. You’ll need to be proactive in making your house an allergy free zone but it is worth the effort.

In this article, I will go over several things you can do to stop suffering from allergies when you are at home.

Keep the carpet clean

Carpets look great and feel good under your feet but they are a great place for allergens to congregate.

The fibers are a natural spot for things like dead skin cells and pollen to become trapped. If you have pets then their dander will find a home there. Vacuuming can only do so much so you’ll definitely have to call in pros like Woodard’s St. Louis carpet cleaning services to come and give it a professional cleaning.

This cleaning gets right down to the base of the fibers and removes everything the vacuum didn’t get. There really is no other way around this. Without deep cleaning, your carpets are going to be responsible for your allergies.

You can get a steam cleaner and do it yourself since you will need to do this regularly to keep your allergies at bay.

Prevention is key

Prevention is the best medicine so your best bet is to prevent the house from attracting and trapping allergens, to begin with. This means giving your pets regular baths and frequent visits to the groomer to make sure they aren’t spreading their dander and mites all over the house.

Keeping windows closed when pollen levels are high will also help a lot. You’ll often notice a fine coating of yellow dust during these times when the windows are left open so it is really important to make sure they stay closed.

Also, during times when there is pollen in the air, you should cover your couch so it doesn’t get into the fabric. Something that can be washed is ideal. Then, remove any blankets or pillows from furniture that can also trap pollen and other allergens.

Get good filters

There are a number of residential air filters that can remove even the tiniest microns from the air. Have several of the powerful HEPA filters around your house to keep the air clean and breathable. Some of them are small and discreet so you barely even notice that they are there.

If you do this in addition to the other measures then you are going to enjoy an allergy free home for quite some time.
